This photo shows a shirtless young man with red hair sitting on a rock outdoors, covering his face with one hand as if upset or tired. He wears denim shorts and sits barefoot, sandals on the ground nearby. Around him are coolers, cans, a machete-like knife, a boombox, and scattered trash. Chalk writing on the rock spells a slur.

Description

This photo of my cousin Chad is from when I was fourteen or fifteen. Around then, a freight train derailed in the middle of the night, spilling toxic chemicals. The whole town was evacuated. My friends and I had been camping by the river, and police boats went up and down looking for us. It's funny because the around that time the Pearl Jam song Evacuation was released.

This wasn’t that night, but around that time. The sun was coming up, Chad was very high, describing the green of the grass evocatively. I remember the green grass as if I was high. I had one of those disposable cameras everyone used back then.
